We are happy to inform you that Version 3.0.4 Release 2 is now ready to serve you. In this release NGL has taken its first step towards Knowledge Management. So lets see what’s available in this update

Features related to Knowledge Management

1. You can now customize Patrons (Experts) fields. Experts fields can be of 3 different types. Work, Subject and Other Fields. Work can be used for Expert’s work like Journal articles authored by the expert, Patents filed, Books authored and so on. You can define different types of work. Secondly, the expert’s subjects of interest and areas of expertise can be defined under subjects category. Apart from this the expert’s affiliation, blogs or any other miscellaneous fields can be defined under other fields

2. OPAC has been updated so that your users can search for experts. OPAC displays the experts’ data in both brief and detailed formats.

3. Your Experts can update their profile via OPAC. They can also define/publicize their contact information like Mobile numbers, Twitter account, Facebook account, Email and mailing information

4. Librarian can activate/deactivate user/expert profiles from NGL Carbon

5. Your users can initiate discussions with Experts via on-line discussion module

6. All discussions and their comments/posts are searchable instantly

7. Every post is automatically emailed to all related users of the discussion

8. Open discussions are also supported

9. Librarian can Publish/Unpublish a discussion or an individual post from OPAC

Features related to library management

1. We added a comprehensive statistical report in Acquisitions to help you providing quick information to your accrediting/affiliating organizations

2. A new view for journals has been added. Apart from Compressed and Itemized holdings now a new view called “Itemized holdings barcode wise” has been added

3. Apart from “New Arrivals Newsletter” now you can send “Content Page” especially for Journal articles in newly checked in journal issues

4. A new query has been added in Circulation to see Reservation status of a Patron

5. “List overdue material in demand” report has been added

6. Overdue column is now added in “Over due material” report.

We are happy to launch a new open source application for Self-service terminals in libraries. We present you NGL Touch 1.0

Why NGL Touch?

Self-service terminals help librarians/library staff to minimize their efforts at Circulation desk. Using Self-service terminals library users can Check out (Issue), Check in (Return), and Renew Items themselves.
NGL Touch application has been optimized for Touch screens. Therefore if your self service kiosk is using a touch screen, NGL Touch is ready for the finger touch.
Please note that NGL Touch does not require any technologies like RFID or EM.

What NGL Touch can do?

Using NGL Touch your users can
– Self Check out
– Self Check in (One level approval of library staff required before actual check in)
– Self Renewal
– Items held by the user
– Important messages from the library like Overdue items, Recall notices, Reservation intimations, Requests for check outs, Over dues to be paid, and Items that need immediate Renewal

The users must provide their login information to access NGL Touch. If you have configured your OPAC for LDAP Login then NGL Touch is also configured for LDAP. NGL Touch also provides an option for auto logout after a specified period in case the user forgets to logout before leaving the self service terminal

NGL Touch uses a separate set of form letters. Hence you can customise them to fit content into even a POS printers (the printers used in Super
markets)

NGL Touch is now part of NGL Installation Files and Upgrade Files. If you are installing NGL 3.0.4 R1 U3 or above then NGL Touch is a part of it.

NewGenLib and Apache Tika – Create digital library conveniently

Do you want to create an open digital repository (Digital library) for your organization? You can do it very easily using NewGenLib. NewGenLib now takes Digital Libraries to the next step by providing Full-text indexing of digital attachments. This makes the your digital attachments also searchable through NewGenLib. NewGenLib also connects to URLs provided in the catalogue record and indexes the remote content.

What content will go into my digital library?

You library may be having following material in digital form
– E-books
– E-Journals
– Digitized and digitally born theses and dissertations
– Lecture notes and presentations
– Digitized maps, plans, blue prints etc… (Any digitized content)
– Audio/Video files
– Software
– Any material in digitized form

Why is it convenient?

You do not need any additional training for the same. You use the Primary Cataloging functionality to catalog and publish the material in the digital library.
Your users do not have to access two different systems for information. They search the unified database.

NGL now indexes digital attachments and makes them searchable

NGL now indexes digital attachments of the catalogue records. The supported document formats are available at http://tika.apache.org/1.2/formats.html. NGL uses Apache Tika for full text indexing. NGL also connects to URLs specified in 856 Tag and indexes the remote content.

– OAI-PMH – Open Archives Initiative – Protocol for metadata harvesting
– Metadata standards – Dublin core, MODS 3.0 and MARC21 (XML)

What is the technology used for streaming data?

NewGenLib uploads the data into the repository using FTP. However data is streamed either in FTP or HTTP.

NewGenLib Open Source Team is happy to announce the release of 3.0.4 R1 Update 1.

What’s new in this update?
—————————
– SIP2 Support: From this release NGL comes with in-built SIP2 support. Just edit your SIP2.properties file and NGL starts the SIP server accordingly
– Full text Indexing and Searching of digital attachments: NGL now uses Apache Tika. With this new tool not only catalogue records but their digital attachments and URLS are indexed. Now you can also search based on the content of your digital attachments
– Web statistics: To know your OPAC usage you can now place Google Analytics code or any other such code
– Sign up in OPAC: New users can now sign up from OPAC. After Librarian’s approval a Patron record is created in the database
– Email new arrivals: Users can now share new arrivals with others through Email
– User ratings of Catalogue Records: An enhancement for User reviews is provided in OPAC. Users can now rate a catalogue record on a scale of 5 (Most useful to not useful). Also, one level of approval is added for User reviews and ratings. After the approval by the Librarian reviews are published on OPAC
– Feedback and comments on catalogue records: Users can write their feedbacks/comments on catalogue records. Librarian can approve and reply for these comments. Approved comments are published on OPAC.
– Users can now submit catalogue records from OPAC along with digital attachments. Cataoguer must refine/approve these records. These records are then added to the main Catalogue
– Circulation form letters made more powerful, simple and more customizable: From this version we are moving all the form letters to Freemarker templates. All form letters will be generated in 3 formats: HTML for rich text, Text format and Message format for SMS & Tweets. Currently, all critical circulation form letters are migrated. In the future all form letters will be moved into this setup
– Cirulcation history download: Users can now download their Circulation history as a PDF file in OPAC
– Auto Sign-on: Integrating your Intranet applications with NewGenLib for a single sign on is now very simple

NewGenLib Open Source nightly build is now ready to serve you. The development team implements Rapid Development Cycles(RDC) to bring out new versions, releases, updates and nightly builds. This proves that NewGenLib libraries do not have wait long for critical updates. Using RDC, NewGenLib constantly evolves according to the needs of the librarian community.

What are the new additions in this nightly build?

1. Feature added: OPAC bibliographic data display is now customisable in a very simple way. Suppose you would like to display “Reproduction note” (with MARC Tag 533) in the Search results. Just add a line
Reproduction Note=533 to Search .properties file. That’s it, your reproduction note will now be displayed.
You can also change the order in which the elements are displayed

2. Feature added: Resort results by Title, Author, Date Ascending and Date Descending are now added in OPAC

3. Feature added: Editable due date during renewals in librarian interface

4. Feature added: Only logged in library’s circulation privileges are displayed in librarians’s interface

5. Bug fixed: The order of the sub fields with in Tag is maintained while being displayed in OPAC

6. Bug fixed: Attachments will now pop-up login prompt

7. Bug fixed: Call number is now displayed properly in OPAC

8. Bug fixed: The problem of showing duplicate items in “Other books in the rack” is now rectified

9. Bug fixed: Renewals via OPAC

10. Bug fixed: 880 (Alternate Graphic Representation) tag which holds other languages data is now handled in OPAC

Introducing NGL Messaging Server: Email solution for libraries behind HTTP proxies

Is your library server behind a HTTP Proxy? And because of this you are unable to send SMSs and Emails to your users. If yes, NGL Open Source has developed a solution for you. You only need to upgrade your NGL installation to 3.0.4 Release 1. No other installation is required.

Introducing NGL Messaging Server
——————————————–
HTTP proxies like Squid (most widely used proxy server for Internet distribution) do not allow Java applications to access SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) servers. Hence your NGL server cannot send Emails to your users via SMTP server. This includes Google’s Gmail SMTP Server. Therefore NGL development team has developed a NGL Messaging Server to solve this problem.
You must configure your NGL installation to specify the NGL Messaging Server details. Once this is done, NGL sends all the Emails to the NGL Messaging Server through HTTP. The NGL Messaging Server in turn dispatches these Emails to your users through SMTP protocol.

Should I do any installation on the library server?
—————————————————————
No additional installation is required on the library server. You only need to change your ENV_VAR.txt(Environment Variables) file to tell the NGL installation that it needs to use the NGL Messaging Server. However please note that you must be using NGL Version 3.0.4 Release 1 to use this feature. If you have already downloaded 3.0.4 R1, there is patch available as a nightly build.

Is there any costs involved to use the NGL Messaging Server?
———————————————————————————
NGL Messaging service is provided free of cost to the NGL User Community. Its absolutely free to use.

What’s new in Version 3.0.4 Release 1 (V304 R1)?

The major development in this version is the all new OPAC. The new OPAC has the following additional functionalities compared to its predecessor.

1. The new OPAC is now based on a Java based template engine called Freemarker. Due to this the functioning of the new OPAC is more fast and efficient. All the OPAC pages are now template based
2. You can now design and develop you our themes and look and feel of the OPAC
3. The new OPAC is now more customisable
4. Library 2.0 features are now added: Users can now add their reviews on books, also tag the records and mark records as their favourites.
5. Both Library home page and Network home page are customisable
6. You can now have different search criteria as tabs. For example: One tab for Books and another for journals and so on. Even these tags and search criteria are customisable
7. Union Catalogue search is now more convenient. You can navigate to individual library home pages from network home page
8. Users can now save their queries. Also their searches in the session are saved.
9. Pre-defined portal pages like Contact us and About us
10. Faceted searching now extended to Library (useful when multiple libraries are in the network), Sub location and Shelving location. Faceted searching like in early version is also available for authors, subjects, geographic names and material types
11. Users can now “Request for hold” for items that are available in the library. Earlier this functionality was available only in Android application.

What’s cooking at NGL OSS Development Center?

The development team is now all set for the development of the 3.0.4 Release 2.

What more can I expect from version 3.0.4?

Version 3.0.4 is broke down into 3 major releases. The new OPAC is part of the Release 1.
Version 3.0.4 Release 2 will mainly focus on Acquisitions. The development is already in the process of developing a very user friendly, efficient and completely renovated Acquisitions system
Version 3.0.4 Release 3 will enhance the current serials management system.
All the 3 releases are expected to be delivered in next 5 months.

The First Open Source “Exclusive Union Catalogue Application” launched

The NewGenLib Team is happy to announce the first Open Source Exclusive Union Catalogue Application – NGL UC.

What is NGL UC?

NGL-UC means NewGenLib Union Catalogue Application. It is an exclusively union catalogue application.

Why do I need this application?
—————————————–
– If you want to build a union catalogue of all libraries in your organisation but each library is running a separate installation of Library Software.
– If you want to build a union catalogue of a consortium of libraries. For example: A consortium of Engineering Colleges in ABC City

Should all my libraries have NewGenLib as ILMS to build a Union Catalogue using NGLUC?
——————————————————————————————————————-
Not required. Your libraries can be be running any ILMS. But to provide feed (Catalogue Records) to NGL UC you need to get drivers built for your ILMS. These drivers must be able to upload catalogue records, user records and circulation transaction records to the NGL UC Server
NewGenLib is built to automatically feed the NGL UC server. However this feature is available from NewGenLib 3.0.3 Update 5 only.

Why is this called “Exclusive Union Catalogue Application”?

Usually many library management systems support Multi-library functionality. But to build a union catalogue you are forced to use the same library management system and also the same installation.
However NGLUC does NOT force you to use any particular Library software. You can use any library software provided you have drivers to feed to NGL UC Server. NGL UC has Union Catalogue functionalities only.

What are the system requirements to install this Application?

Server Hardware: Intel Dual Core Processor or any equivalent make or higher processor speed, 2 GB RAM
Server OS: Windows or Linux family
Static/Public IP for your NGL UC Server.
Clients: Web browser

Is this application Open Source and Free?

Yes, its from the house of NewGenLib Open Source. It is honestly open source under GNU GPL V3 license. It is completely free.

In what languages is it available?

The “NGL UC Beta 1 release” currently supports UK English only. But the NGL UC Version 1.0 will support more languages.
